Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pont d’Avignon (Saint-Bénézet) was built starting in the 12th century. Visiting the bridge offers a deep dive into the city’s history. Closely linked to the papal life of the Middle Ages, it was a passageway for pilgrims traveling between Spain and Italy, a point for controlling river traffic, and a toll station. Frequently damaged, it was rebuilt after wars and river floods, and was finally abandoned in the 17th century, leading to its eventual demolition.
